Taking a chance on a growing market, two Edmonton-ians opened Mucho Burrito in Fort Saskatchewan Monday.
“This city’s grown like mad. That (population) sign on the way in is just changing daily,” co-owner James Seetoo, 31, said Monday, hours after the restaurant opened its doors.
The franchise is located in the new Southpointe shopping centre, near Shopper’s Drug Mart at the Highway 15/21 intersection.
The fast-food restaurant specializes in burritos, quesadillas, tacos and other Mexican specialities. The chain has nearly 30 locations in Canada.
Sitting in the Mexico-coloured local franchise, Seetoo said he and his partner, Harrison Mortara, 27, see tremendous opportunity in the Fort because they believe the market is underserved when it comes to restaurants.
The local franchise is the duo’s first. But Seetoo — a former Pizza 73 regional manager who was responsible for the Fort’s location that opened last year — said if things go well, they will open more franchises.
Their interest in opening an outlet started with the food, Seetoo added.
“We were avid customers before deciding the take the leap,” he said.
According to Mucho Burrito’s website, franchises range in cost from $200,000 to $470,000.
The company, which launched its brand in 2006, is planning aggressive expansion in Canada, wanting to see 200 more franchises open in the next five years.
